Betsy DeVos and Her Family’s Donation to Different Institutions and Causes

Apart from the millions of dollars that DeVos family has donated to the Republican candidates in the country, Betsy and her husband Dick has given millions of dollars to different charitable institutions and causes. They make charities through their charitable foundation that they set up in 1989. It is through her choice of donations that one can easily see why she was the top choice for the Education Secretary post by President Donald Trump.

In 2015 alone, Betsy DeVos and Dick DeVos Family Foundation shelled out $10 million to different institutions and also pledged more $3.2 million grants that will be paid out in the near future. The biggest contribution went to former CNN Campbell Brown to launch her education website, the 74. She also donated the same amount to Brown’s non-profit organization, The Partnership for Educational Justice. The foundation gave $150,000 to Success Academy Charter Schools and had approved $150,000 for future payments. A Christian school in Grand Rapids, the Potter’s House, also received $200,000. Betsy was the board member of the American Federation for Children and stepped down when the President appointed her as the Education Secretary. The couple donated $100,000 to non-profit Alliance for School Choice that works in close collaboration with this foundation.

Betsy DeVos also made donations to many conservative organizations such as Institute for Justice and Intercollegiate Studies Institute Inc. Betsy is dedicated to bringing reforms to the education system in the country, and this is the reason why she has donated to many colleges and universities. The biggest contribution went to University of Maryland College Park Foundation, and they received $500,000. Other schools that received generous amount were School of Missionary Aviation Technology, Ferris State University, Davenport University, Rollins College and more.

Betsy DeVos was the choice of President Donald Trump for Education Secretary in November 2016, and the Senate voted to confirm her appointment on 7th February 2017. She was born in 1958 and raised in Holland. She was active in politics from her 20s but did not hold any elected office. She has spent years advocating for school vouchers programs. She was Republican National Committee for Michigan from 1992 to 1997. She was then appointed the chairperson of the Republican Party in Michigan from 1996 to 2000 and again in 2003 for two more years.

Betsy is married to Dick DeVos Jr., the son of Dick DeVos Sr., who is the co-founder of the Amway and owner of Orlando Magic. They have four children together, two daughters, Elissa and Andrea; and two sons, Rick and Ryan. Even after being from one of the wealthiest family in Michigan, Betsy and Dick ensured that they donate to the causes they believed in and did so with great commitment. The DeVos Family’s Fight for Education

The DeVos family is one of the most prominent and well respected families in the United States. This family has resided in Western Michigan and is known for building and developing Amway Corporation (the family business). This family is not only an intelligent family, but is also a family that has contributed millions of dollars to organizations and foundations within the United States. This family, with an estimated worth of over $5 billion, has donated a considerable amount to local as well as national organizations that have plans to reform current issues. The DeVos family is a family that is proud to serve their community.

Of the many different charities to contribute to, the DeVos family believes that one of the best ways to improve a community is through promoting education reforms. In the DeVos’ opinion, education is what helps others learn how to improve themselves rather than being given improvement. Educational reforms not only help young adults learn to think outside of the box, but it also helps to promote innovation which is the leading way to bring any community out of poverty. As the currently leader of the family, Dick and Betsy DeVos have plans to continue to support their community through educational reforms.

Dick and Betsy DeVos have been involved in activism ever since the 1980s. The involvement within the community began when the DeVos family began to support the low-income families at a private school in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Though this has helped the community considerably, Mr. and Mrs. DeVos have admitted that creating these reforms has been an uphill battle. The couple has learned that this battle that they fight for education is not an instant victory, but instead is a generational victory. Though Dick and Betsy admit that getting involved can be intimidating, they have been nothing but happy with the noticeable improvement of their community.

Though many would give up on education reform, the DeVos family continues to fight. Their overall goal is to allow anyone to pursue a higher level education that is based upon merit and not based upon income. In the DeVos’ opinion, those who show potential should not be shunned by those with more family income. With that said, the DeVos family continues to raise money as well as build new charter schools for students across the United States. Though it is an uphill battle, the DeVos family is happy to fight for education.

The Life of Yeonmi Park

Yeonmi Park is a young Korean activist who was born and raised in North Korea. Her family lived under the brutal dictatorship of King Jong-il. The conditions were so bad for them that is 2007 they had to flee North Korea into China. Getting out of North Korea was no easy matter for the Park family. Yeonmi’s father was sentenced to hard labor after being implemented by the government for illegal trade within the country. When he returned home from the prison camp he urged his family to leave the country. When the family was ready to leave for China, they discovered that their oldest daughter had left for that country without them. Apparently she had told them she was going somewhere else but had already made plans to defect to the Chinese nation. So Yeonmi Park, her father and mother had to make the trip without her. Park’s family had journeyed to China by crossing the southern border of North Korea into that country. They escorted along the way by human traffickers in the area who specialized in smuggling North Koreans into China. Yeonmi said that her mother raped during this time though she tries to block out the memories. Once the families make it into China they looked for the oldest daughter. They settled into the Jilin Province to begin their search but they kept coming up empty. Eventually they turned back to the traffickers for help. This time around they were introduced to a group Christian missionaries that helped the family to escape into Mongolia and then into South Korea. Once Yeonmi and her mother made it to South Korea they were safe. However, Yeonmi’s father had died in the early stages of the journey. Yeomi and her mother did not find her lost sister until 2014 when she was finally located by authorities. After the events that she had endured to gain her freedom, Park became a human rights activist and told the world her story on casey&yeonmi about life in North Korea. She currently works as an activist to help North Korean refugees and defectors and she speaks out against human trafficking as well.
