Before establishing the Open Society Foundations on a global scale, Soros first became involved in philanthropy during the apartheid situation in South Africa. Starting in 1979, Soros donated scholarships to black South African youths so that they could pursue higher education. As a true supporter of the free and open exchange of ideas, Soros later provided funding so that people in the Eastern Bloc in the 1980s could by copy machines to make copies of banned books and papers. This was a valiant effort on the part of Soros to assist with undermining communism so that the people of Europe could live in freedom.

When asked about the motivation behind all of his philanthropic efforts, George Soros is not shy in the least in explaining that his financial success in his professional life has afforded him the resources that most people can only dream of accumulating in their lives. Soros said that with these massive resources, he is able to fund projects and bring awareness to important issues that have a direct effect on human rights and the preservation of freedom around the globe. He has no intention of scaling back his incredible endeavors anytime soon. Soros also says he has a compulsion to take a stand on important international issues on which others remain silent because his personal wealth and resources give him opportunities that almost everyone else in the world does not have. For Soros, it is vitally important to continue speaking out where there is truth and injustice in the world so that people who have been robbed of their voice have an advocate fighting for the restoration of their rights. He certainly blazes a trail for other world leaders to follow.
